Fellows travel independently for eight months, exploring six or more countries in two or more major regions of the world. Approximately 16 Bonderman Fellowships will be awarded each cycle – eight undergraduate and eight graduate/professional. Since Bonderman established his travel fellowship in 1995, 254 UW students have been selected as recipients. Thanks to his recent commitment of a substantial endowment to keep funding the fellowship, UW students will continue to have their lives — and perspectives — altered for decades to come.

The Bonderman Team/College of LSA is still reviewing the fellowship and how/if the COVID-19 pandemic may impact the fellowship. The Bonderman Fellowship application is quite a strange one. You don’t provide a transcript or resume; no one asks for you to describe your prior work experience or list your specific grades. Instead, you must 1) write an essay about how this Fellowship would impact your life, and 2) propose a theme for your travels along with a possible itinerary that addresses this theme.
